Absolutely. It’s how death statistics are tracked. If someone has metastatic lung cancer and the physician just puts “pneumonia” on the death certificate, what is that death going to be counted as?

just a lay person here, so cut me some slack, but is that an accurate source of data? let's say someone diagnosed with metastatic lung cancer decides to take a shortcut and puts a bullet in his brain, what is the cause of death?
