So in the year 1666 Sabbatai Zevi became a Jewish prophet. I guess in Judaism you get the actual messiah when everyone is either completely good or completely bad. So the Sabbatean branch decided it was easier to get everyone to be completely bad. So they encouraged all sorts of horrific things to be common so as to bring their messiah. Apparently it got about half the jewish population on board with it. I don't know what good resources are to find more info but I dropped a couple hoping they will do it justice but it's connected to the frankfurt stuff...
