They just give you an arse ton of reading and writing for homework. It's meant to mimic college, but college was far easier than half my bullshite AP classes just due to the decreased homework/workload.
I do recommend taking AP classes though, simply because you don't know what quality of education you'll get out of the core class version. AP at least gives you a standard to follow for the end of year test.

Well, this, and you can test out of having take entry level courses.
I went TO college with 18 hours already because of AP test and ACT scores. HUGE advantage. Gives you more schedule flexibility which is great. And my senior year I only had to take 3 classes my last semester (to keep TOPs.)
