Sure and if the target audience was the voters, Mitch would lose in a landslide.

McConnell-backed candidate vs. Trump-backed candidate in a primary. Who wins?

What if I told you more often than not, they're endorsing the same person and thus when that candidate wins, Mitch will have much more leverage over him than Trump could ever have?

As long as Trump keeps endorsing establishment stalwarts who kiss his arse and blow smoke up it, Mitch has the leverage here.

Mitch and and Trump endorsing different people is few and far in between so that negates your point.

Why do either have to back or be backed by McConnell? They can just both say they support Trump, and then do whatever they want once elected. It's not like politicians aren't malleable. I'd imagine all of them trying for office will pay obeisance to Trump (regardless of their true feelings) rather than set up convenient McConnell v. Trump options.

R Candidates nationwide do not need to say they have McConnell's backing or back McConnell (over Trump) because McConnell doesn't require or need their stated fealty as a test, he'll just work with whomever takes office over the next six years of his term.
