This is a conservative version of "virtue signalling." Its not about being right or wrong on your interpretation of the character, its about showing that you are part of the pack.

We know, from the actual myths Loki comes from, he was perfectly willing to be any gender or species. This is like people throwing a hissy fit over King Arthur being a cuckold because his wife did the no no with Lancelot. Or having the vapors over Sauron being a eye of fire in the Lord of the Rings.

It's completely in line with actual Norse mythology about Loki. This is one of the few cases in which the writers are completely within bounds to say he is gender fluid.
