That is such a misleading article and strains the definition of “energy independence”.

US oil production at its tippy-top peak was about 13.5mmbopd. US consumption pre-COVID was 20mmbopd. I think production has ramped back up to around 11mmbopd and consumption is up from where it fell. And companies, amazingly, are being disciplined and not overreacting to the recent price bump.

Is there a difference between energy independence and oil production -v- oil consumption?
