Many Protestants want us to take the Bible literally, and when we do they say "Well not that verse.
Any one verse can be taken out of context. If one particular word or phrase is used the same way throughout scripture, and suddenly that word or phrase is interpreted a different way, simply to fit a preconceived belief, it’s a good chance that lone interpretation is wrong.
One must also take into consideration who the audience is, when it was written, local customs, etc.
Besides doing word studies, using scripture to help interpret other scripture seems to work well.
