If it helps, there are plenty of people who have found happiness and fulfillment without making lots of money. Of course it's important to meet your basic financial goals (house, education for children, safety, retirement planning, necessities), but it's wrong to think that wealth accumulation is a primary goal for contentment.
I say that as a teacher*.
And while it's been hard in some ways to see my close friends eclipse the $100k/year mark before 35, I wouldn't trade places with them. I enjoy my work. I have the time to pursue creative endeavors. I have a lot of quality time with my family.
*Wife is also a teacher, so we make about $120k combined in Alabama. Benefits are covered and we're in a defined pension plan.
