The last two episodes were crazy good and made up for about 5-6 pretty weak episodes. At least weak in comparison to last season. It just wasnt as funny. It was still good, funny, entertaining TV but season one was just all time good.

I think what would have made it better for me is if Ally would have been more involved in the season or they would have gotten back together. She is a great character and he's funnier when he's around her. They were a fantastic couple. You waited multiple episodes and the show built up their seeing each other for the first time for multiple episodes and it just ended up them being around each other for 10 minutes of screen time. That was just disappointing to me. And now she's got a boyfriend.

But, the last two episodes redeemed almost everything for me. I love Gata and if he would have been left out of the closing act, I would have been pretty let down.

She's great. But, as I said earlier in the thread, she grounds Dave and he wouldn't have spiraled out of control as much with her. If he doesn't spiral then the argument with GaTa at the end doesn't really make sense. There wouldn't have been as big of payoff at the end if they didn't tear down Dave in the beginning IMO.

i wonder if the first half of the season was kind of dave's nod at not wanting to be viewed as a comedian, and be taken more seriously as an artist. idk, i remember when ex boyfriend came out (pretty sure i found it thanks to this board, way before the music board) and i thought it was hilarious, possibly so funny that you miss just how skilled the dude is with his timing, phrasing, vocabulary, etc. when he wants to be. yeah, he's got a juvenile sense of humor but he's also a super talented artist.

overall, i didn't think s2 was as good as s1, but i think the gap is going to lessen with time.

has dave said anything homophobic in any of his lyrics? i can't think of any, but the gay episode might have been his way of apologizing if so. and giving a nod that it's hard to be black, it's hard to be gay, it's extra hard to be both. who knows

s2e9 might be my favorite episode of the series
