If the police believed his safety to be at risk, it is safe to assume the crowd was acting in a threatening or menacing manner. Making threats of physical violence constitutes assault. Not saying this happened, but it is a perfectly logical explanation for why the police intervened.

With that many people, no telling what kind of verbal threats were lobbed out and heard by police. Easy to see some redneck in cowboy boots threatening to kick his arse if he set fire to the flag.

I’m saying at a public university there should be adequate security so that he’s not in physical danger as he does his silly little nonviolent protest.
