We just acquired a second switch for Child 2. After I created his profile I went to link it to my existing Nintendo account, and it morphs his profile into Child 1's automatically and essentially "erases" Child 2's profile.

Does anyone here have multiple switches and know if I should create separate Nintendo accounts for each of the switches? If so, it would obviously have to be created under a separate email address?

I've never had any issue having multiple accounts with access on the same Switch.

I don't have a second Switch, but I do know that you need a family account for both to be playing online simultaneously.

ETA: I don't think this should be necessary if he does not intend to play games online.

Yeah, you need to upgrade to a family account for online play.

I guess I should clarify. We do not have a Nintendo Online subscription. The account I was referring to is the Nintendo account that is tied to my email address for going into the eShop and making purchases, downloads, etc., and is asking me to link an account to on the new switch. When I link to that account, it automatically changes the profile of Child 2 to Child 1.

For example, the new switch came w/ Mariokart. The first thing it asks me to do is to go to the eShop and select the account I want to use to download it.

I ran into this same issue when I got a second Switch for our household and wanted to be able to share the games between them but still keep separate profiles. After hours Googling it, I finally came to a workable solution.

You do need two separate Nintendo accounts to login to the store with, and yes it has to be a unique email address. I wound up creating a second gmail account that I only use for the store. If you use the same email address on two Switches, it sets one up as the Primary and one as the Secondary. The Secondary Switch can only login under the profile associated with the email address on the Primary. As an added bonus, the Secondary Switch can only play games if it's connected to the internet. So long story short, I'd just create a second Nintendo account and save yourself a lot of headaches.

It is confusing as hell, but let me know if you run into trouble and I can try to help.

If you want to share the games you've bought between the two Switches, this link will help.

To further try to clarify my above post... Each Nintendo account can only have one Primary device associated with it. The Primary device can have as many profiles as you want on it. One will be linked to your Nintendo account, then you can have as many "local" profiles as you want.

If you associate your profile with the same email address on a second Switch, that device will automatically become the Secondary device. A Secondary device can only login under the profile that's associated with that email address (which is a profile from the Primary).

If you sign up for a second Nintendo account for your second Switch, it will be the Primary device for that email account, so you can have as many local profiles on it the same as your other device.

I have no idea why Nintendo made this so confusing and difficult. It can't be that far-fetched of a scenario that a parent would want to have more than one Switch in their house...

It's Nintendo. It's what they're known for. I love them and they could shite in a box and I would buy it. But they make things unnecessarily complicated

Probably has something to do with green pieces of paper.
