How do you control for the variable that risk in police work arises from the unique duty to take away the freedom (arrest) people who are prone to not go along with it and resist with deadly force? Other professions involve danger inherent in objects, materials, machinery, etc. that don’t spontaneously choose to create danger when resisting.

There were plenty of police that died in the towers that day. You just had nearly an entire ladder company that died together. That’s why they get more attention.

9/11 was an outlier and you can't really use it when factoring average LODDs per year. I got into the fire service in the summer of 2001. For as long as I can remember, there's been an average of about 100/year with the exception of 2001.
