For me it was watching the German guy slowly putting the knife into the chest one of our guys. It was bad that our guy got it, but the way the German was talking to him was like he was trying to make the horror less - to calm the G.I. No winners in this kind of situation.

That's easily the most intense scene. That and the scene at night in the church, when the medic tells the story to Hanks about his mother, and how he would pretend to be asleep when she came home. I don't know why but that scene really gets to me.

I thought the opening scene when they got to the beach was the general consensus answer for this.

Na I can watch the opening scene but I have to turn it off when it gets to the slow knife scene.

I just can't watch that scene.

for me, it's when the elder Ryan kneels down at the cemetary and starts crying

- but only after I saw the movie once. The first time, I didnt get it, but after watching it thru once, on the second go-round as you quickly replay the movie in your head, and you realize why he's crying - that always gets me

The most intense scene is Doc's death when he starts calling for his mother.

Totally agree...something about hand-to-hand combat. the up close and personal nature of that scene is just brutal. Also the fact that it could have been avoided if the dude on the stairs had sacked up!

I think to me this scene makes the war very human - if that makes sense. It is not our guys fighting some nameless, faceless enemy - it is our guys fighting other people and the guy in the staircase reinforces this to me. How the German guy just kind of walks past him and leaves after that is as powerful to me as the rest of the scene.

This is the scene where he asks his wife whether he's a good man. Most intense scene of the film, IMO.

the dude in the staircase wobbling his legs and not going up there

and it was weird how the german guy didnt want to kill him, but had to. he was liking talking him through his death as to make it less harsh. war seems crazy.

The cemetery scene is pretty emotional I'd have to go with that. While it's not violent or cringe inducing, it really does bring down a crash of emotions.
