Mark Wahlberg.
Not that he's some extraordinary actor but he has worked out pretty well in a lot of roles. When he first popped up in some movies, I was like "Marky Mark in a movie? No way!"

I’ll second Mark Wahlberg. Comes on the scene as more/less a knock off Vanilla Ice, and then ends up an A-list actor for the next 25 years.
