So I guess my approach is buy a new Japanese car, change fluids regularly and ignore everything else until the car dies on you.

If you don’t want to go to a mechanic, you can get codes checked for free at many/most auto parts stores. Ignoring them is just a good way to be parked on the side of the road with a potentially fatal mechanical or electrical issue - then you end up selling the vehicle for its scrap value.

In other words, why would you NOT want to know why a warning light is on?

I've had 4 Honda/Acura products between my wife and I and we've legit never had a check engine light ever pop up.
