Pretty sure he has disc issues in his neck which leaves him in considerable pain and probably medicated.
In no way is that an excuse for the teams performance, but might explain why he isn’t animated, moves his head slowly in the dugout and lacks energy. Losing his dad, plus Tommy Lasorda in a short span would only exacerbate the situation.
I hope he retires after this season so that he can go get healthy and enjoy his grandchildren. He has kept us in a position to compete for championships more often than not. While it might not be to Bertman’s level dominance, the game has changed as well and parity is the norm. This isn’t 1990s or even 2000s college baseball.
He’s run a clean program, no investigations or scandals. I appreciate the way he has represented my alma mater and wish him only the best in his next endeavors.
