I'm from Israel and find it funny when people catch a hot few weeks and think it was quiet before then. There's always something.
Also that even the most conservative Israeli Jews don't treat Palestine as mortal enemies the way Americans think we do.

As for Israel "being a friend" or not ... my thoughts have always been that seeing western partitioning of the middle east, coupled with coups, false pretenses for attack, etc. put Israel in a very defensive position with England and the us.
