I don't really see an issue with this package deal. If Mitchell lasts only a year and his soon to be stepfather is a headache, you just go in another direction at that time, no harm to either side.

Except (1) you'd likely have to force someone out on your staff for a guy who has one year of college coaching experience and only gives you a good (though not lottery-good) player for one year and (2) if I'm the step father I'm not agreeing to a one year contract or any terms that allow the school to dump me after a year with no cost to them. If it truly is a "package deal" then he is going to leverage the player for all he can. Is LSU/Wade that desperate? Maybe. But I can't see that being the case. Wade is in no danger of losing his job for poor on court performance and expectations of the program aren't unreasonably high next season.

If you can bring him on as "Director of film and net replacement management" or some other BS title as a front for the actual job of "director of getting this player to sign with us" then it probably wouldn't be a bad deal. If you are bringing him in as an assistant at the expense of one of the others that is probably a different story.

I suppose it all depends on what is allowed in the regulations. For example, is it possible to negotiate with a current coach to become a consultant or shadow staff person, with an appropriately negotiated bonus under NCAA acceptable terms? I suppose it is not acceptable to pay a large premium to the Dad to come in as a consultant or administrator as under at least some circumstances that would be an improper payment. The one thing we don't need to worry with Wade is having elite coordinators for him to be successful. Even if coordinators come and go, Wade will still be there. It's a different dynamic with football. I'm not taking a shot at O, but his success is more dependent on having elite, stable coordinators.
