I always thought the next incarnation of west side would be a grittier version involving a black and Hispanic gang since whites gangs really don't exist in inner cities anymore, but this version does look interesting.

You just described the most recent incarnation of WSS on Broadway before Covid hit. Maria was black, Tony was white, and the gangs were a white/black/Latin mix. It was also set in the present day rather than the 1950’s like the original.
It appears that Spielberg is sticking pretty closely to the original source material, which is a good thing IMO. WSS is a classic of the American musical theater.
