The Latest Update On River Cruising In Europe

From someone that I know that has worked with Viking. Assume it'll relate to other cruise lines as well. Asked him about an upcoming November Cruise and Viking in General...
It wasn't exactly the best news. They plan to launch 10 ships in August for English guests and maybe another 10 in September for American passengers. although neither is certain. they might call me if they let those ships go in August and September because i don't need a visa and we have a lot of crew members who are from Indonesia and the Philippines and can't work in Europe without a visa.
What is your best guess on our cruise in late November of this year? Do you think they will go or not?
It’s really hard to know at this point. the biggest problem is that all European Union countries are under lockdown. The European Union depends on the "Pfizer" vaccine for political reasons, they do not import the English, Russian and Chinese vaccines, so a very small percentage of the population is vaccinated. they are probably waiting for the German "Bayer" to release the vaccine for the European Union market, and that will be in the fall.

Well, that's not true. They are using J&J and Astrazenneca(sp), too. The EU just dropped the ball in securing vaccines when the US and UK were buying it before any vaccine was ready.

Ya, there is some political issues regarding AZ, but that's split with their shitty contracting. AZ also delivered about 100 million doses than promised from my understanding. Europe went cheap with AZ and when that fell through they had no backup.
Good news is Pfizer did promise more doses and vaccination seems to be picking up in Europe.
The problem with cruising Europe will be testing requirements from country to country. You can't PCR test every 2 days on a boat. Some countries are switching to vaccination exemptions but but not all yet.

We are booked on Viking 6/15 thru 6/22 around Bermuda and Viking has said they will give the PCR test daily to passengers and crew. They are supposed to have a lab onboard.

While that's quite remarkable, frick having to do that test every day.
*The one time I took one I did not do well to say the least

We're still trying to figure out what he meant by the "10 in September for American passengers". Like who/what/when/where?
Keep in mind this guy's worked for Viking on ship for years and this WebEx was designed to give the crews some updates. Seems like it would possibly favor singular countries, maybe some Balkan routes. We'll see.

I mentioned in another thread, our July Danube River cruise has been cancelled. Viking gave us a 125% voucher so we rescheduled the cruise for July, 2022, with some significant upgrades.
