It has to do with naval taxation in the French colonial period. Ocean going vessel were taxed at a higher rate than inland vessels. So, the early explorers called it a "lake" to avoid the seafaring tax on their vessels. By the time the crown realized what was going on, then name had stuck.

Half of me hopes this is made up because it is masterful if so.
