I have a hard time believing Mulkey would come here, mainly because I'm not sure LSU would be willing to match her $2.2 million/year salary, or that she really has much interest in building another program. She has one of the three best programs in women's college basketball RIGHT NOW, and has won 3 NCAA championships the past 15 years, including the one we lost to them in '05.

So many of you are off the rails. The money and tax bases and all else that you are getting tied up in fits is irrelevant. Kim Mulkey will come to LSU for two reasons and only two reasons : Louisiana is home and her momma is here. she knows she can turn LSU into a power again, whether that equals what she built at Baylor remains to be seen. The WBB landscape is a lot different now than it was 15 years ago. There is more parity at the top and LSU has been relegated to the second tier. Family will determine where she closes out her illustrious career and being able to resurrect LSU in her home state while looking after her mother has to be mighty appealing. LSU can make it happen and it may not take matching her current salary, but if so the hire will pay for itself in short order.

I fully believe that Mulkey would relish the opportunity to coach in the SEC. She has kicked the Big-12's arse for a decade. There is nothing left to prove over there. With the exception of South Carolina, the SEC is up for grabs. The right coach can have LSU contending for the top 4 in no time.

I agree with you that this all boils down to if she wants to return home, retire here, and do something big for her state once again.

However, her mom isn't here anymore. She actually lives with or by her in Texas.
