I’m not saying that nothing should happen. Fire the officer (except she quit.) The department should pay the family. But criminal prosecution and prison for an honest mistake while attempting to perform her job properly?
Let’s jail people for giving you fries instead of tater tots, or for sending a fax to the wrong department. I get that some jobs are riskier than others, and that’s why a lot of professions require licensure (so it can be revoked if needed) and insurance to pay for mistakes.
But if we start imprisoning people for mistakes at work, why take the risk of working? Especially in a high risk job. We can all just vote for universal basic income and work as baristas part time, and be safe. Nobody is perfect and everyone has made errors. Most of us are just lucky nobody has died from ours.
ETA i’d be interested to know people’s opinions based on their job. I wonder if people who work high-risk jobs (cops, military, medical, maybe people who design bridges and such) would be more or less likely to be for jail time.
