Retractable awning for back patio

I've been kicking around ideas for my back patio and I'm intrigued by the notion of retractable awnings. I want to be able to let light in the windows I have facing my back patio as that is pretty much all the natural light my living space gets. At the same time, I would like a cover for my patio so that it can be utilized in the summer and also as a cover for my girlfriend's lab so I can leave him out when we have to go somewhere (he goes nuts when inside the house and left by himself).
I've considered pergolas with sails or translucent polycarbonate covers but I'm now considering a simpler option of either a sail with hook attachments or a retractable awning.
Does anyone have recommendations or thoughts on either? I always found that awnings looked pretty crappy but I have seen a few online that have a more modern and stylish look.
Appreciate any input.

Dont leave up when gone. High wind comes up it going to get broken. Use when at home

Well that definitely defeats part of my rationale. I would want it to be open for the dog in case of rain when we are out.
