Slab or raised house?

I had vinyl in a bathroom, kitchen and dining room in my house and it is a raised house. What I did was used hardy backerboard screwed to the floor to give the new ceramic something to really stick to after applying thin set.

It's been down since 06 with no issues at all.

If a slab, I'd likely just take the vinyl up, clean up the slab where needed and then lay the ceramic.

You'd have to get a thinset that specifically for that and you may want to float over the vinyl with leveler.

Is it full spread or perimeter glued? How many square feet?

If it is full spread and under 200sf, acid etch the vinyl and then clean the surface really well (De greaser). You'll need a Modified thin-set and epoxy grout. Anything over 200sf the NTCA suggests removal of the vinyl.

FYI....Had a friend that did this.
All was good until the house flooded with a few inches of water. The water had no place to go under the tile.

It should naturally go in the slab but was trapped with the vinyl. Had mold and other issues start after.

Long story....He removed it all and said never again.

Just something to consider.....
