Wrong, we laughed first.
I'm not sure how this notion that "LSU fans laughed at their joke of a coach Miles from the very beginning" lines up with the fact that the man coached at LSU for a long time.
If everybody in the world thought that he was a clown and joke of a coach, I guess he held the job because he recruited well and had a good winning percentage?
It's a bit puzzling.
I'm unpersuaded. Maybe a few LSU fans thought he was a joke of a coach, but, he held on for far longer then he was any good because, LSU fans liked his public image.
I looked at Les Miles's W/L record at Oklahoma State and saw a mediocre to "maybe" slightly above average coach.
Then I wondered to myself, "LSU was unable to find something better than THIS guy?!? LSU really sucks at finding great coaches."

In November 2011, Les Miles was on even footing with Nick Saban. They both had one NC with their new school, and it looked like Miles was going to get his second NC first.
And then..........

Because fans usually don’t make decisions to hire and fire coaches. Can’t believe this is news to you. He lost the Arizona State game, his first at LSU if not for a bad call that allowed a TD late for us to win that one then he blew a 21-0 halftime lead against a bad Tennessee team with no QB at Tiger Stadium the very next week. We had 0 first downs in the second half until a Hail Mary on the last play of regulation despite a roster that included 4 top 6 picks, with a #1 overall QB, a future HOF left tackle, a multi time All Pro, and 3 other 1st rounders. Those of us who know anything were laughing at him after a game and a half.
