Decided i wanted to return to a platformer game and picked this up. Not entirely sure if i hate it or love it. What does the board think of this title?
So far i love the boss fights. ive defeated the mantis lords. figuring out the patterns for the bosses is great fun
i dislike the jump puzzles . I am not using a controller. using a keyboard for this game feels like s disadvantage. Im guessing that later on, i will be required to complete some insane jumps to progress
i dont like doubling back to areas far away to get secret charms an stuff.
the combat is ok, not extremely satisfying but i suspect charms will make it easier and more fun
is this game worth continuing? Got any tips for a noob? i did learn about down-slashing

good game, got the platinum for it. stick with it
lots of people online have proclaimed it the GOAT metroidvania, but I didnt find it as good as the Ori games, Blasphemous, or Salt & Sanctuary

what are some good charms to look for. more damage, extended range, what else is there worthwhile
remembering where shop keepers are at is a pain.

Awesome game. The combat is simple but the controls are so responsive. It's a huge game with a ton of bosses and your first playthrough will take 40-60 hours if you do everything. The amount of content you get for your money is top notch especially by today's standards.
I highly recommend using a controller, I use a ps4 controller, because later you will need to do downward and upward slashes to kill bosses and pogo off of them and this is best done with a control stick. There are a few areas in the game that I can't imagine doing with KB+M.
If you aren't a fan of backtracking I'm not sure what to tell you. Metroidvanias are infamous for this. There are some fast travel methods that really open up how fast you can get around though later.
There are a few bosses and events in this game that are among the greatest achievements you'll have in gaming if you beat them and stick to it. There is one boss in this game that I would say is far and away the hardest boss I've ever had to learn to beat in a game.

One of my all-time favorite games. Can't wait for Silksong to come out.

There's not a ton of that outside of the White Palace and I didn't even go there during my first play through.

It's one of my favorite Metroidvanias. I played it when it first came out on PC, wasn't feeling it, then picked it back up on the Switch and forced myself to stick with it until I got the hang of it.
I tried Blasphemous on PS4 and didn't dig it.
Bloodstained is another good one.

Watcher Knights? Those bitches gave me the most trouble, but I didn't put in the time to beat every single boss.

Charms just let you play however you want. Want to be ultra defensive? You can do that. Want be an up close tank? You can do that. Want to spam spells from across the room? You can do that. Etc.

The platforming, particularly the air dashes across some of those instant-kill crystals/spikes are particularly brutal. I'd strongly recommend a controller for those.

That xbox one pro controller with the hair triggers was clutch.

Much harder than watcher knights. I don't want to spoil anything but just know that that isn't even close to the hardest yet.
One of the great things about hollow knight though is as you start doing harder and harder bosses you will absolutely destroy the earlier bosses on your next play through. The skill you pick up translate well from boss to boss.

Hooked up a controller and its way easier. Pretty funny that I even considered using the KB.
Got the Nailsmith upgrade. Feeling better about things overall. I'll stick with it.

The game really doesn't hold your hand when it comes to gameplay, where to go, what to do, or lore. So there's some good YouTube channels if you need any help.
Curious about charm combos, where to get abilities, how to beat bosses, etc: Rusty
Any question about lore: mossbag
Just want to see some crazy speed run shite: fireb0rn
HK really seems to have one of the nicest gaming communities.

Having to chase down humming dude just to get the map for a new sector is maddening.

But that feeling of buying the map, sitting on the bench, and seeing the areas update...

IGN walkthrough helped me when I was lost. I kept it open and would reference it every now and then.
