If I had to guess, they told the pledge class to finish the handle. Poor kid probably wanted to impress people so he decided to drink the majority of it. I can’t imagine they expected each kid to finish a handle of jack (especially since no other kids had alcohol poisoning).
"Poor kid lost his life to drinking. Such a bright future."
Poor decisions equate to poor consequences. Not every one can lead a promising life regardless of life status.

In the 17 to 20 year old age group especially among guys, peer pressure is a huge factor in personal behavior, you cannot really say the kid was acting of their own free will, kids of this age range will do things as part of a group that they would never do as a individual acting alone.
