There are a lot more people here that can't say this that have more political influence than they should. And not particularly talking about people who come from south of the border. They at least get it as their ancestors went thru the same thing to come to the Americas. It's others that have come to this side of the world with no respect for how it came to be. South of the border got over took by what we are seeing now back in the mid 1900s, and it now made it up our way. As we got complacent, and held to how our Constitution will protect us and prevail. Sadly that is not the safety blanket anymore.

Ie...the overturning of the 1924 Immigration Act in 1965ish was definitely a major factor in this slide. OP I'm assuming your grandpappy grew up when that Act was in place.
The times, and views of the future were different.
