I have a Verizon iPhone through work
Wife has a personal att iPhone
I’d like to get an Apple Watch. A few questions:
Can i answer calls with an Apple Watch with phone service if the phone isn’t nearby?
Can I link an att watch to a vz phone? If not, can I just get vz Apple Watch service stand alone?

To answer your questions:
Yes you can answer your apple cellular watch without even having the phone nearby. On AT&T it runs me $10/mos
Any cellular watch can pair to any provider unlike the phone models.

Just like an iPad , you will need to purchase the cellular model over the “wifi only” model. So if you don’t have the cellular hardware , you will not have that option to make calls without the iPhone near

How much Does having the Apple Watch plus air pods decrease the need for an actual phone?

Depends on what you want it to do. If you're just taking calls, it should work. If you're wanting to listen to podcasts or stream music, I think it depends on the application. I can control Spotify through the watch, meaning skip to the next song, pause, etc. But it has to be near the phone and the phone is what is actually driving the sound to the airpods.
But it is nice having the watch and airpods and not worrying with a phone sometimes.

With apple music you can download albums and podcasts etc directly to your watch. So the apple watch can play those downloaded songs, albums, and podcasts without the need for the phone. This does not work with streaming services like Spotify and Pandora. Also, my air pods connect directly to my watch, eliminating the need for the phone. fwiw I'm using iPhone 11, Airpods pro, and Apple watch series 3

should have stated this first: my intent would be to make and receive calls from my watch via my airpods as well as listen to spotify through the watch/airpods combo. if that's not possible with a cellular enabled apple watch, then it doesn't work for me.

Yes. I use it like this all the time. Perfect for running while on conference calls.

I should have also specified, without my phone being with me.... same applies?

You do not need your phone for the conference calls. But to stream spotify, you will. Do you have apple music?

It need to be on veroizon. I had the same issue. My company wasn't yet letting you add personal apple watches to your work cell phone. I switched jobs and now I have both. It's great.

No, only Spotify. This makes my decision. Thanks for y’all input.

FYI Spotify is supposed to be supporting apple watch only streaming soon, but I'm sure Apple isn't making that easy.

I have a completely separate Apple Watch question, but since this one seems solved I figured I could hijack the thread instead of starting a new one.
I just bought a used AW 5 off eBay. The watch was wiped when I received it, however in some places the watch still shows the old owners name.
So I set my name in the Apple Watch app, and under Bluetooth connections on my phone it shows my name, but when I went into the setting on my phone to unlock my phone with Apple Watch, it still shows “Carlos’ Apple Watch”.
Is there any other place to change this name? Is it just a glitch? Do I need to do another factory reset?

Correct. Spotify should be watch only as well very soon or may be there now. The reason why I had gone with Apple Music is because of that. I am patiently waiting for XM with watch only so I can listen to turbo of course

I would do another reset and pair it with your phone. I've had my series 3 about 2 years now, and I've only had to reset it a couple of times. Usually after a software update to either my phone or watch. Also we got our daughter one for her birthday a couple of years ago, but we didn't have her phone set up yet. So I paired it with my wife's phone to set it up the first time just to make sure it all worked, and a few days later did a reset and paired it with my daughter's phone. We've never had an issue with it, so try the reset and repairing.

I’m on the Beta version of both, just for the unlocking with a mask on feature. I will wait until the official releases come out for both and if those updates don’t straighten it out I will do a reset at that point
