I believe it took the DoE about 8 hours to issue approval. My understanding was request was sent 2/14 at noonish and approved 2/14 at 8pm.

And by then, it was too late. Rolling blackouts had already started because the grid was about to collapse. And then, the first area they blacked out was the Permian Basin. Less populated for sure, but that cut the power to the gas lines and their pumps (which as we discussed earlier are no longer run by reliable engines fueled by natural gas because of “muh emissions” but by electric motors). That cut gas supply to power generating plants when it was needed most and allowed gauges and pumping equipment to freeze.
