It's a classic because the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Driver was off-the-charts good for her. Alan Arkin with a brilliant small role. Joan was better than John. Piven hit a homerun. Akroyd in a rare villain role. Tons of small performances (Azaria and K. Todd Freeman were great together as the government spooks, Michael Cudlitz, Steve Pink, Barbara Harris). The soundtrack was fantastic. The pacing was right.
The movie didn't miss a single beat.

Yeah, it was more of a painting sets a mood of an ocean sunset versus a photograph gives the crisp details.
Even the most mediocre artist can paint some incredible sunsets.

This.
It shouldn't work, but it's just straight up charming as a film. Easy to enjoy any time. Rewatchable. Quotable.
