Whether you agree with the Civil War and no matter if you fought for the cause for the north or south, you really don't understand what those people stood for and what causes they were fighting for. Is it really necessary to rewrite history and have these anthem discussions for people who fought for their cause. No one today lived in those eras except for those still alive from WW2. People are more concerned with discrediting everything these people did in creating this country once they assumed control from the British. Were mistakes made, no question. Did the people making those mistakes give a damn that 100/200 years later they would still be causing such an uproar. A lot of people today need some reality checks on what those people went through in early America. Was slavery wrong, most certainly. Those people still fought for what they believed in and did far more for this country than anyone who tears down a statue will ever do!

The problem is society can't seem to grasp how ignorant it is to judge people from 150+ years ago based on ideals and standards of 2021. Society and humanity changes with each generation, and what is viewed as abhorrent now may not have been then. Joe Rogan had Douglas Murray, a British political commentator, on his show several months ago talking about this. He poked fun at how ridiculous Americans are with tearing down monuments of historical figures that helped build this country. He joked about how young this country was and how much more barbaric Europe was centuries ago before America was America, and none of them are trying to erase their history because men who may be viewed as bad now weren't back then and still accomplished very great and important things. Not shockingly, youtube has since pulled that episode from Joe Rogan's catalog too

Yes, slavery was bad. Yes, discrimination based on race, color, creed, religion, etc is bad. A lot of things that used to be commonplace we now understand are bad. However, people are simply products of their environment and the era in which they were raised. Things that were widely held ideals and societal standards shouldn't be used to crucify people of that generation. If we start going down that road, we will effectively end up needing to "cancel" prior historical figures with each passing generation as ideals and societal norms/beliefs change as I'm sure eventually there are things we believe right now will end up being viewed as barbaric hundreds of years from now. It's just an absurd self-defeating idea.

maybe we should try to predict them now so 100 years from now we’re not trying to change them because we already did

What about judging them against people of that era... who didn’t practice slavery or discrimination ... morals existed back then also
