Fair concern.
Despite their literature, I am pretty sure the 3.8L is just a "de-bored" 4.0L with updated heads and with 9 speed auto (instead of a 5 speed). It shouldn't be any less reliable, but who knows what else they changed.
They do get significantly better MPG. The old 4.0L Frontier would see 17mpg on a good day.

Same motor, different app, lifted, armor, 10 ply 33s.... 15.8 mpg average.
