In the same boat, mine is almost 14. He had an episode last weekend where he threw up 3 times in an afternoon and couldn't keep water down. Rushed him to emergency vet and they ran all kinds of tests. He has a mass developing but had an intestinal bug causing the immediate issue. All the way there I had tears in my eyes thinking this could be time to make that decision.
To the OP, sorry for your loss but you are doing the right thing.

My old gal suddenly fell ill yesterday evening and died today around noon. She was 14yrs old.
