Stoves are WAY more efficient in putting out heat then a fire place.

Saying that the window is "Cracked" open is a very general term. To help you solve or improve your problem, please measure just how much did you open this window? 1/2", 1" or 2"? How much the window is open can make a big difference. If the window is only open say 1/2", try opening it 1" or more to see if that helps to reduce the smoking.
