When talking about athletes from past generations, people want to say that “they could be stars today”. But the truth is, with current training and nutrition schedules, few past athletes could be successful today.
I believe Pete could. His skills and the way he could control a game would translate well in today’s game.

I’ve heard that too. Never heard the N.C. State story, although I did hear that his preferred choice was actually to play for West Virginia University...but, yes, he chose playing for his father even over that.

I know, right... Is everyone who is commenting a Charlotte Observer subscriber? Found it odd that I needed a subscription to read the article.

I was a freshman at LSU while he was a senior. I got to watch him in the home games at the Cow Palace. I remember one Saturday afternoon that we had a game against Kentucky The line to get in and watch him was very long. However, they fit everybody in to watch the game. That game was also on TV. I'm just glad that I got to see in person the greatest basketball player of all time. I never saw anybody handle a basketball like Pete did. He was amazing.

Pete was a generational talent! I was still young when he played at LSU, but did catch every game that he did come on TV during his college years. Word was that people would come see Pete play as a freshman, then when the varsity team played, everyone left! I was a big N.O. Jazz fan so saw most of the home games at the Dome while Pete was in NOLA. Back in those years the paper had coupons where you could get 2 tickets for 4 dollars. My buddies and I would sit the first quarter in the nosebleed seats then move downstairs to the good seats. And yes, I was at the 68 point game against the Knicks!

Absolutely the finest non-big man to play college basketball.
