I could not agree more. Both Lawrence and Fields probably have much more athleticism than Burrow, but they don’t have cognitive recognition like he does. He is just so good at reading defense and taking what’s available. I watched two more draft busts tonight in Lawrence and Fields

Couple things to note on Lawrence and Clemson’s offense.

One, really pay attention to that offense and you’ll see he’s rarely making full reads. Clemson has a diverse running game which allows them to set up a variety of play action looks along with screens, swing passes, misdirection passes, etc that are largely predetermined as far as where he’s supposed to go with the ball. He usually just has to make the throw to whoever the play is designed for, or make half field reads. That will undoubtedly be a huge adjustment for him in the NFL. Justin Herbert ran a pretty rudimentary passing offense at Oregon, and to most people’s surprise has excelled right out the gate in the NFL, so it’s not a death sentence. But Herbert is also brilliant and ihe almost seems more comfortable with a more sophisticated scheme.

Two, Lawrence has a very long delivery which I think is why he struggles with accuracy when he doesn’t have a clean pocket. He’d be better off tightening things up a bit which I’m sure he’ll work on. Trent Dilfer touched on some of this stuff the last time he went on Russillo’s pod.
