i'm looking to get a night blooming cereus as a gift for my mom. we had a few growing up and it was always cool when my dad would get everybody up to check out the blooms late at night. they were left out in a freeze a few years ago and died. we lost my dad over the summer and i think it would be a nice gift to remind us of my dad and those memories when it blooms.

i didnt realize what mistake it was to let them go until now. i'm on the northshore and every nursery i've called has scoffed at the idea that i could find one around here. only one place even offered to sell me a cutting.

before i order one online for what i'm sure will be too much money, i thought i'd check here to see if anyone knows of somewhere that has them. i'm on the northshore, but i'd be willing to make a drive to snag one. this isn't neccessarily for christmas either. i'm not realistically expecting to get this in the next couple of days.

appreciate anyone's help/suggestions

Try Harold’s on Press St in NO. Lots of oddities there, like pitcher plants, etc.
Also try calling one of the big nursery places in Lecompte/Forest Hill area: like Poole Bros or Clyde Holloway. They might not have it, but I’ll bet they can either find you some or point you in the right direction.

Have you tried Facebook? I've actually gotten several free plants from Louisiana plant groups. I'm sure you'll be able to find someone willing to share a clipping.

If you lived around Bossier, I could hook you up. We have several. They multiply quickly. Started with one small clipping.

yep that sure looks like the one. we used to have 3 or 4 MASSIVE plants. they would each produce 10+ blossoms. i didn't appreciate them at the time. but looking back they were incredible. i've been kicking myself for allowing my parents to let them go.

OGM, good call on facebook. i hadn't even considered that. i think i already found a pair for a decent price on facebook marketplace.

i appreciate the responses

i'll be sure to bump this in 2 or 3 years when they bloom

Does it really take that long for them to bloom from a cutting? I got a cutting from my moms plant at the end of summer.

from what i've been told, they will take two years from when they take root to produce a bloom. i don't really know. the ones we had growing up were already mature plants.

My mother in law has some on her back porch. Last few years, we’d get the text from her when they bloom.

Be sure to get them in when it gets as cold as it did last night. Or get a tarp and a space heater to set up outside so you don’t lose them.
