I finally lined all this up and found the pipe coming out of the house. Previous owner must have had problems before, because it had been changed from concrete (neighbors have all said they had to replace their pipe in the yard as well) to pvc where I found it. Of course, there was no cleanout installed, but I will install one soon. Thanks to everyone for all the advice.
