The 308 is ballisticly almost the same as the 30-06 and a 270 for that matter, you said you don’t want to tote your 06 around so the tikka in 308 would be very similar and would be fine for elk, and most other big game, with that being said, if I already had an 06 and was looking for a new gun I would get something balliatically diffrent, look into a 7mm mag, 300 win or 300 wsm, 338 win mag, or dozens of others
