My daughter called me upset about her lab. Kids screwed up and let the dogs out of the fenced in backyard. Lab got hit. Broken hip. To operate and get her back on her feet ...$5500. I took my daughter aside and told her .."I can pay this, but you will have a dog in misery in three years because of issues surrounding the hip. I will build a "No escape fence and gate, plus buy you a new puppy Lab for far less than $5500 ....the kids forget about your loss in two weeks." The dog was put down for $200.

Some find this harsh, but I find it practical. No way in hell I'd put out $5K to operate on any animal.

I don't understand people that will damn near go broke or put themselves in debt for a couple years to allow a vet to operate on an animal that is a household pet.

And the last animal I put down cost me $.25 or less for the cost of a single shell.
