It likely wasn’t the normal vet right? Id call the normal vet and ask them.
Vet billing always seems all over the place to me but I’m sure they have methods. One day you’ll go in for basically routine check up and it’ll be $400 and the next time you have a minor surgery and it’s $250.
To be fair OP, if it was a human surgery $4000 out the door is like a Mexico special.

My daughter called me upset about her lab. Kids screwed up and let the dogs out of the fenced in backyard. Lab got hit. Broken hip. To operate and get her back on her feet ...$5500. I took my daughter aside and told her .."I can pay this, but you will have a dog in misery in three years because of issues surrounding the hip. I will build a "No escape fence and gate, plus buy you a new puppy Lab for far less than $5500 ....the kids forget about your loss in two weeks." The dog was put down for $200.
