I think Phelps is now with out a doubt the greatest athelte ever. The only person that maybe has another case is Lance Armstrong.

Phelps is going to win 8 golds... I just don't see Ryan Lochte beating him in the 200 IM, and that's the toughest of his remaining events.

maybe, but Phelps is not the "Greatest Olympian Ever" because some douchebag on NBC said so.

the olympics are a gathering of the worlds best athletes, so if you are the best of that group all time you are automatically the best ever as an athlete

no, i would think the most gold medals ever would be a pretty good judge though

why? if you want to call him the greatest swimmer, ok, but come on, ease up on the hyperbole. and don't get caught up in the whole # of medals thing either, its bs cause there are way more events in swimming than in track.

What about the athletes in the Olympics that may be just as great they just don't have 8 opportunities within their sport to win gold?

Going to have to agree with mburne on this. IMO there isnt a tougher and more competitive stage than the olympics

pfft, there are so many events in swimming, in track there is 1 100M race, in swimming there are 4 for 4 different strokes. In track there is 1 sprint relay, how many relays do they have in swimming, you are saying he's the best, because he is dominating an event that has way more events. Spitz prolly wins 8 Golds in 72 if there was a 50m race like there is today

exactly, he's dominating the best in the world in different distances, and with different strokes. He may have more opportunities to win golds but still it's more impressive IMO

why, cause the say guy wins different variations of the same race? If they ran a 125m and 150m race in addition to the 100m, don't you think the same guy would have a shot at all 3? That's fricking stupid. They only have 2 relay's in track, 4X100 and 4X400, if they had a 4X200, Lewis would probably have 2 or 3 more golds. Now if they added a medley relay (100,200,400,800) and we win that, is he more impressive?

Spitz wouldn't stand a chance in the 50. There's a totally different kind of swimmer that swims that event.

Then you think swimmers are better athletes.
