It is a unique book in the bible and many wish and are taught to believe it is about the future. It was actually a type of unusual writing in that it is written in an apologetic style and uses numbers abundantly style was familiar to many of the churches of that time, particuliarily in what is now Southern Turkey. In most of the Roman empire at that time it was a death penalty to be a Christian. Therefore, if you were caught with scripture, this book, it could be the death penalty. John wrote it as such so when any of the holders were caught it would be not be viewed as a book of the bible. The Christians at that time knew, for example, that 666 was the emperor. They knew the 3 different stories we read as separate occurences were the same story repeated from 3 viewpoints. Bottom line....if you read it as it was meant to be read, it fits nicely into the New Test, if you don't it reads as an end-of-the-times book.

I think it goes much deeper than this.

Revelation 13:18
Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six."

John is clearly indicating this is a riddle. "Let he who hath understanding (wisdom) count the number." The number is of a man.

Man is a carbon based being. And it so happens that carbon 12 is the most abundant of the carbon isotopes found on Earth and it has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, and 6 electrons. It's also the 6th element on the periodic table.

I think that when John says 666 is the number of man that is meant to be taken quite literally. The atomic weight of man is literally 666.
