That would require amending the Constitution. Amending the Constitution requires a super majority vote in the House and Senate. Not going to happen. And if they tried to cram that through, working around the Constitution, and pakced the courts to work around the SCOTUS checking their arse at the door, there would be a revolution within hours. They don't want that kind of smoke. They may think they do, but they really really don't.

Just remember in the weeks leading up to the election last time, when some thought Trump might win the popular vote and Hillary the EC, she went on record defending the EC.
