Thanks. I've done the drive but whatever route I took, took me over the continental divide (maybe Cottonwood pass?) and while a stunning view/drive... it seems pretty treacherous in winter with snow. I want to say it did not take me through Gunnison, so perhaps your route is "safer"?

Oh yea Cottonwood pass would be a nightmare in the heart of winter. That thing slips right between Yale and Princeton. Great road for summertime. We went fishing at Cottonwood lake twice in early fall.

I’d say my route is pretty standard and while it does goes right by monarch mountain, the road right there is still pretty well maintained.
