You realize they also likely did not pay their full leases for the arenas either, right? It's a balancing act.
This year's hit wasn't expected to be the one to look at. It will be next years. They NBA got its playoff television money whether there were fans there or not. That was not lost.
They were 3/4 done with the season when things shut down. Team's also saved money on travel expenses, paying for employees at the arenas and much more. It wasn't like they paid everything anyhow. It was proven they didn't pay all of their employees that were furloughed.
That said, next season will be the big one. They lost a lot of fans with their actions. It was their choice, and so be it. There will be consequences.
