That sounds like a trap.
Why would he need to "pick up" emails? shite, have your IT people set up a private FTP on your server or just create a free email account (yahoo, gmail, etc), share the password then load the data into the Drafts folder.
Those are two ways which are far quicker and easier than going somewhere to pick up (what I assume is) a thumb drive.
I wonder if he's trying to trick some intel folks into pulling a PapaD-stop-n-frisk on him.

The more instances the data has been “touched” digitally the more opportunity for those trying to kill the story to say it has been modified/falsified in some manner. Evidence 101, never let the data out of you physical possession.

Because malicious actors could interdict the transfer or deny access. Offline copy preserves the ability to utilize even if a 0 day exploit brings the entire net down.
