It calls into question the very basis of what that journal is supposed to stand for, namely the unbiased investigation of medical diseases, protocols and therapies with the goal of improving healthcare for everyone regardless of race, creed, etc.
I don’t ask patients who they vote for before treating them. The NEJM has no business taking official stances on individual parties or candidates. Medical research can’t be allowed to mired in widespread allegations of political bias, because the research published in their journal is one of the major sources used in medical guideline development.

I think they have an eye toward history and want to make sure that they're not among the Scott Atlases when this is remembered.

Even worse, medical research is now being mired in allegations of racial bias.
You wouldn't believe the kind of studies that are being selected to receive federal grant money...simply because of the skin color of the researchers conducting the study.
It's all about "diversity" after all. It doesn't matter how relevant or well constructed your study design may be - if you don't have the right skin color, you're going to get passed over.
I promise you it's happening.
